Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been consistently associated with increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia but the causes for this relationship are unknown. In this study we investigate whether long-term instability in glycemic control is associated with the function, structure, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption of the hippocampus (hipp), a brain region which is affected very early in AD. Since poor glycemic control is amenable to treatemtn, the study may have implications to the health of T2D elderly at risk for dementia. In addition, it may shed light into mechanisms underlying AD in all elderly.
